Apple drops a spot on 2025 Fortune 500 list

The 2025 edition of the Fortune 500 is out, and Apple once again ranked near the top, while Walmart and Amazon remained firmly planted in first and second place, respectively, for the sixth straight year. Alphabet, meanwhile, was the most profitable company in the top 10.

Landing in 4th place in this year’s Fortune 500 list, Apple has stayed pretty consistent over the past decade. Since 2016, the company has alternated between third and fourth, trading spots with UnitedHealth Group, Exxon Mobil, and Berkshire Hathaway. That trend continued this year, with UnitedHealth narrowly overtaking Apple to claim third.

Walmart, meanwhile, held onto the crown for the 13th consecutive year, followed by Amazon, which has commanded the second place since 2020 and remains the only other tech-driven company consistently in the top three.

Here are the top ten Fortune 500 companies for 2025:

  1. Walmart
  2. Amazon
  3. UnitedHealth Group
  4. Apple
  5. CVS Health
  6. Berkshire Hathaway
  7. Alphabet
  8. Exxon Mobil
  9. McKesson
  10. Cencora

Raising the bar

Collectively, as noted by Fortune, the 500 companies on the list brought in a record $19.9 trillion in revenue, and $1.87 trillion in profits in fiscal year 2024. The revenue threshold to even make the list climbed to $7.4 billion this year, up 4% from 2023.

One notable shift in this year’s list was the surge in healthcare companies toward the top:

“The healthcare sector, generating a combined $3 trillion in revenue, accounted for eight companies in the top 25 ranked Fortune 500 companies. Thirty years ago, in 1995, the top 25 included no healthcare companies.”

Fortune also highlighted a record number of female CEOs among the 500 companies: 55 in total, or 11% of the list. That includes Mary Barra (General Motors), Jane Fraser (Citigroup), and Corie Barry (Best Buy).

California still leads, but Texas and New York are close behind

Geographically, California continued to top the charts with 58 companies headquartered in the state. Texas was close behind with 54, and New York rounded out the top three with 53. New York City was still the leading Fortune 500 city, home to 43 companies, nearly double that of second-place Houston.
